Wielding a decade of experience in legal and public services, Eugene G. Bilmes began primarily in family law and commercial litigation before shifting gears into his role for the Office of Chief Counsel at the IRS in 2022. As a general tax attorney, he utilizes his expertise to defend the United States government and IRS against lawsuits, in particular those suing to overturn audit decisions.
Attributing his success as a law professional to his strong support network, family, and friends, Mr. Bilmes prepared for his career by earning a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2009 followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Wayne State University Law School in 2013, after which he was admitted to the Illinois State Bar Association. While studying law, he gained pivotal experience clerking with the Stillman Law Firm, where he researched law sources and drafted motions and briefs for review, approval, and use by attorneys.
Mr. Bilmes’ first job out of school was with the Kalouris Law Firm from 2015 to 2018, where he worked as an associate attorney, representing clients in the areas of family law, landlord-tenant disputes, and breach of contract claims. He then found success in the same role at Hecht Schondorf, LLC from 2018 to 2022, focusing on a variety of civil litigation cases. In this capacity, he notably provided expert advice and successfully handled litigation for a prominent manufacturing company based out of Addison, Illinois—the client appreciated his skills and professionalism and ultimately entrusted him with high responsibility. Mr. Bilmes considered this a significant milestone in his law career that would propel him to new heights of success.
After being burnt out of family law and commercial litigation, Mr. Bilmes sought a change and was referred to the IRS through a former colleague. He has found his work as a tax attorney to be a better fit for him and his skillset.
